Journey underground at Castleton's Caves

Castleton, Derbyshire

Go underground and visit any of Castleton’s four spectacular show caves to experience the Peak District’s hidden underworld secrets.

Peak Cavern has the largest natural cave mouth in Britain, known locally as the ‘Devil’s Arse’ thought to be because of the allegedly flatulent-sounding noises that emanated from inside the cave.

Descend the steps at Speedwell Cavern to cruise along an underground river by boat and listen to the guide’s tall tales as you head towards the ‘Bottomless Pit’.

Move on to Treak Cliff Cavern, the only place where Blue John is still mined, to see some of the area’s finest examples of stalactites and stalagmites.

Finally, venture up dramatic Winnats Pass and its towering limestone rock faces to take in Blue John Cavern where bones dating back 4,000 years have been found!

Afterwards, head back to Castleton where you’ll find plenty of pubs, tea rooms and cafes to put your feet up and enjoy a well-earned break before browsing in the gift shops to buy a piece of Blue John jewellery to take home.
