one are the days of muddy wellies and freezing cold showers, camping’s undergone a bit of a revolution lately. There are sites to suit all moods - from quiet beaches to woodland havens - with people pitching up in all corners of the country.

Take  Troytown on the Scilly Isles, for example, where you wake up to the sound of the sea and a view of the uninhabited island of Annet just across the clear water. This sleepy island is a car-free zone but, rather helpfully, the campsite owners will pick you (and your luggage) up from the ferry port in their tractor.

Or maybe you’d prefer something a little more bohemian?   La Rosa Campsite in North Yorkshire has eight vintage gypsy caravans, all decorated up to the nines with colourful kitsch. Facilities are on the ‘rudimentary’ side (the showers are in a converted cow barn and there are compost loos), but the beds are comfy and the nature outside your front door is among the most beautiful in the country – at least we think so.

However, if the thought of spending the night without a duck-down duvet sends shivers down your spine then how about a spot of ‘glamping’ (that’s ‘glamorous camping’)?   Jolly Days in Yorkshire offers posh-style tents with chandeliers, sofas by the fire and four-poster beds (yes, you did read that correctly). No blowing up the air mattress or digging around your rucksack for the torch here – just plenty of time to break open the bubbly and relax…
