Bath

Hot property and baths for the culture minded

B

ath is the perfect destination for those with an interest in history and a cultural bent. The UNESCO World Heritage City has the Royal Crescent and Circus and stunning Georgian architecture wherever you look. Then there are world-class theatre shows, and the fabulous and newly-refurbished Roman Baths - the only hot springs in Britain. Hot property, then.

History and Heritage
The fact that the entire city has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status gives you some idea of Bath’s pedigree. The Romans were the first locals, and bequeathed those Baths to the city, while the eighteenth century Royal Crescent is still one of England’s most prestigious addresses. Throw in the Circus and Pulteney Bridge and you have enough to keep even the most backward-looking history buff in clover.

Arts and Culture
The Jane Austen Centre celebrates Bath’s most famous resident as well as giving you an insight into life during Regency times. For four hundred years of clothing trends and the unique experience of trying on corsets, the Fashion Museum is not to be missed. Elsewhere, the Victoria Art Gallery houses work from the 15th century to the present day, including pieces by Gainsborough and Zoffany.

Must See Attractions
For the best bath of your life be sure to indulge yourself at the Thermae Spa where you can reap the benefits of the mineral-rich waters like the Celts and Romans did over 2000 years ago. The open-air rooftop pool has incredible views across Bath as well.

Food and Drink
Have a super posh cuppa to the sound of an orchestra in the elegant Pump Rooms . For pasta with pizzazz, head to Jamie’s Italian, the TV chef’s lively restaurant. Or treat yourself to Michelin star cuisine at Lucknam Park . Sugar junkies should sample an authentic Bath bun, where gooey sweet yeast dough is sprinkled with sugar – sweet as.

Shopping
With grand Georgian streets and bustling passageways to explore, Bath is all about finding your own way amongst boutiques and quirky gems. Milsom Street is a good place to get your bearings. Bookworms will also love this erudite city, and should not miss the chance to get a signed copy of their favourite books at Topping & Company , which has weekly signings from top authors.

Key Events
You’re guaranteed a lively debate and talks from top authors at Bath Literature Festival that kicks off in February. For full-on belly laughs, the Bath Comedy Festival showcases the rising stars of stand-up. Or travel to Badminton for the annual Horse Trials, one of the most exciting and quintessentially English equestrian events on the calendar.

Family Fun
Enter The Egg - Theatre Royal 's award-winning theatre especially for youngsters – to experience a play the kids will actually enjoy. Or if there’s excess energy to burn off, head to the Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park in Keynsham where they can meet alpacas, tackle the adventure playground and generally bounce around in an excitable manner
